We can treat children from a year of age, through to young adults. Although there are data suggesting toddlers are 'easier' to treat than older children, really the difference lies in how your child's life style can be accommodated whilst taking the OIT treatment.
Most people with peanut allergy will be suitable for treatment, however if your child has had severe anaphylaxis during a previous reaction, this may mean that their allergy is too severe. The risk from treatment will likely outweigh any potential benefit.
Both of these conditions, if present must be perfectly controlled before initiating OIT. Poorly controlled respiratory illness increases the likelihood of reacting to OIT doses. We will fully assess these conditions and make recommendations to improve control before starting OIT.
Peanut OIT is not suitable for children and families with uncontrolled anxiety due to food allergy.
During our assessment, we will look at all these issues in detail and make a thorough assessment and recommendation for treatment.
